Creating an international innovation hub for engineering biology

The Engineering Biology Research Center (EGBRC) is creating an international innovation hub for engineering biology through industry-university-government collaboration. The project has the following two main aims.

  1. The development and application of a novel research engine for bioproduction: The project aims to develop bioprocesses to produce a variety of useful molecules from biomass such as plants and algae.
  2. Research and development of smart cells: Smart cells are cells that maximize the ability of microorganisms to produce substances from renewable resources. The project aims to develop smart cells by establishing its own DBTL (Design-Build-Test-Learn) workflow.

In addition, working with various overseas partners, the project will introduce automated experimental systems utilizing machine learning and other information analysis technologies and robots into the engineering biology field. Through these efforts, we aim to establish an advanced “bio-foundry” that efficiently produces microorganisms and enzymes required by society in an extremely short period of time.
